Kamal
hassan’s Rajkamal Productions started the film
with a grand function in Madurai earlier in the name “Chandiyar”,
and now its renamed as “Virumandi” and
its audio has been released this week. As we expected Maestro
Illayaraja is composing the music for Rajkamal productions again. 2 weeks
earlier Kamal gave a statement that “As an Illayaraja
fan I can proudly say Virumandi has the best music ever composed
by Illayaraja”. Suddenly the expectations hit
the clouds after his statement. Is that true? Let’s move
on… Album
starts with “Onna
Veda” sung by Kamal hassan
and Shreya Goshal. The song starts in a unique way telling
the situation with a bus sound crossing the road and then the song
starts with Shreya’s voice smoothly. All the songs in this
album based on Madurai tamil (a type of speech tamil spoken in
Madurai district area), In this song Shreya couldn’t sing
the song in that exact pronunciation, any
other tamil singers may make this song sound even more better.
But except the pronunciation, it’s very well sung by Shreya. The Charanam parts are very
sweet to listen and it’s a very nice romantic melody. It’s
one of the best songs of the album.
Next
comes the song “Anna
lakshmi” sung by Kamal
hassan & chorus. It starts with chorus and some strange
sound comes(Don’t know the instrument), sounds like a heavy breath
and then the flute piece is very nice. After they sing each line,
a voice stretches the words a little bit with sounds like “aaaee”.
It’s a nice small song.
“Nethiyilae
Pottu Vai” by Thirudayan,
Sukumar, Karnanidhi.
Illayaraja has used the traditional folk instruments like “Urumi” & “Naiyandi
Maelam” very well again here. It seems like a situational
temple festival song. Very rhythmic bit song.
“Maharasi
Manna Vittu” by Theni Kunjaramba. We got
confused when hearing the song because it starts like a sad song
and then the singer asks the persons to play the instruments and
a happy rhythmic BGM is played. But when listening to the lyrics,
the way the singer sung the song confuses again whether
it’s
a sad song or happy song.
“Karumathur
Katukulae” by Thiruvudiyan,
Mary, Sukumar, Periyakaruppu devar. It’s a typical
Villupattu song. Nice to hear this type of traditional
Villupattu song in this peppy
music world. Some parts of the song make our foot to tap.
“Andha
Kandabani” sung by Illayaraja,
Kamal Hassan, Karthik, Tippu, Surendar. In first hearing
we wonder what’s
going on in this song, because it starts with lot of voices shouting
something. Again this song also seems like a Koyil Thiruvizha type
song. The highlight of the song is the voice of Illayaraja. Its
hard to believe its Illayaraja’s voice singing in
a very hard way. It’s a very fast paced catchy number.
“Mada
Vilakae” by Kamal hassan. Once
again its sung by Kamal hassan, a sad situational song and a
very hummable tune. It’s a good song but some other singers
may make the same song a great one.
“Kombula
Poovai suthi” by Kamal hassan
and Chorus.
It opens with trumpets and sounds like Jazz type song. When looking
at the lyrics it seems like a “Jallikattu” situational
song. Words like “Damakku Damakku” sounds funny
and cool. It’s a OK song.
“Karbagraham
Vittu” by Illayaraja,
Kamal Hassan, Karthik, Tippu, Surendar. This is the same as the
7th song but with different lyrics.
And
also “Chandiyarae
Chandiyarae” song
by Shreya Goshal is the same song like the 2nd song with different
lyrics. Again Madurai Tamil pronunciation
of Shreya is not good.
Overall
some fast paced traditional folk music is given by Illayaraja
in this album. Again its hard to believe bad tamil pronunciations
in an Illayaraja album especially in the songs sung by Shreya.
Six out of Ten songs sung by Kamal hassan, though he sounds good
in some songs other professional singer may make those songs
sound great.
All
the songs are very situational and when hearing the album it
makes us to feel like, we’re in a village festival.
Though the songs are not upto Kamal’s earlier statement (“As
an Illayaraja fan I can proudly say Virumandi has the best music
ever composed by Illayaraja” -Kamal) it’s a good album
from Illayaraja after a long time.
WOW!
: Illayaraja's traditional folk music
Oops! : Shreya's Madurai Tamil pronunciation &
again Kamal singing 6 of 10 songs
