4 PITHAMAGAN - Tamil Music

STARRING : VIKRAM, SURYA, LAILA          DIRECTOR : BALA

MUSIC : ILLAYARAJA        LYRICS : Vali, Pazhanibharathy, Mu.Metha

 NANJILONLINE RATING

The same team of “Sethu” (Bala – Illayaraja – Vikram) & Surya are teaming again in Pithamagan. Because of two top stars Vikram & Surya are teaming up in this movie, the expectations are very high. Illayaraja gave some soul touching songs in Sethu. Everybody expected another masterpiece from the maestro, but, is the songs up to the expectations? Let’s move on…

The Album begins with “Piraiyae” sung by Madhu balakrishna (who sung the excellent song “Edhilum Ingu” in Bharathy) and lyrics by Vaali. The song starts with a humming and the starting of the song has some resemblance with “Putham puthu Poo Poothathu” from Thalapathy. The rhythm sounds good and catchy and the interludes are nice especially the 2nd interlude is outstanding.

Next comes “Elankaathu” by Sriram Parthasarathy, Shreya Ghoshal and penned by Pazhanibharathy. It’s a typical Illayaraja melody – duet. The Lyrics by pazhanibharathy suits the song very much and it’s well written. Although the tune reminds us the “Malai koyil vaasalil” song from the movie “Veera”, it’s very catchy and soft. It’s a better song in the album.

“Adada” sung by K.J.Yesudas and lyrics by Mu.Metha. This song starts in a grand manner with heavy drum beats. It’s an emotional song sung very well by KJY, but in the charanam parts his voice shows his age. In the first interlude the instrument tharai/thappatai (don’t know the exact name of the instrument) sounds really strange, Illayaraja has used some strange instruments in this song like Sangu (Which is played in funeral ceremony in some parts of Tamilnadu). This song sets the mood for the movie and definitely it’s the pick of the album.

“Aruna Runam” - Old songs medley. It’s just a mixture of old songs and nothing new in this song. Just to fill the Cassette/CD space.

“Elankaathu” by Sriram Parthasarathy. It’s the same song but this time it’s a solo song with the same lyrics.

“Kodi Yethi Vaipom” sung by Bhavatharini, Periya Karuppa Thevar, Sanmugasundari, Raghavendar and chorus. Lyrics were written by Na.Muthukumar. It’s a typical “Koyil Thiruvizha” (Village temple festival) song. It starts with traditional Tamil music instruments like thavil and naiyandi melam(used in village temple festivals). After pallavi we can’t understand why the singer sung the song like a throat infected person. The song suddenly changes in the middle and then changes back again. It’s a foot tapping number, but not a great song.

Over all, it’s an average album. Though it has very good song like Adada, Illayaraja has rehashed his own old tunes in most of the songs. Everybody expects a song sung by Illayaraja in this album like “Yengae sellum” in Sethu, but he disappoints. Some of the songs in this album may sound better if they were sung by some other singers.

WOW! : 3rd Song
Oops! : Same Old Tunes (Nothing New!)

VERDICT : Buy this album, if you're a hardcore fan of Illayaraja. Others, Wait for the movie release and decide.
