| After
his last movie Alavandhan starring Kamal Haasan came a cropper at
the box-office, producer Kalaipuli S Thanu has come up with a film
made on a very small budget with limited cast but effective screenplay.
Punnagai Poovae directed by Sabha Kailash is a film with no extraordinary
stunts or glittering group of dancers swaying to tunes.
Though the storyline reminds us of Gemini-starrer Thamarai Nenjam,
veteran director Putanna's Teacher Amma and Kalyana Parisu, the
way in which Sabha Kailash has handled the screenplay makes the
difference. Nandha, who makes his debut as a hero (he acted along
with Surya in Mounam Pesiyadhe) has done justice to his role. Though
the movie is all about two women and their romance, Nandha proves
that he has it in him to make it big in the Tamil film industry.
One of the heroines Rekha, though has tried her best, has to go
a long way in terms of performance, while Kaveri walks away with
honours with a good showing. The comedy track of Vadivelu certainly
fails to evoke laughter. The storyline goes like this: Rekha and
Kaveri are friends from their childhood days. While Rekha is a carefree
girl who falls in love with Nandha the day she sees him in his house,
Kaveri stays away from romance. However, Nandha who had not seen
Rekha, mistakes Kavery for her (Rekha) and falls in love with her.
Attracted by his love and affection, Kavery reciprocates his love
without disclosing the facts.
However, the director has left us wondering as to why Rekha had
not called over his mobile, when she had gone to her native village.
The rest is all about whom Nandha marries.
M S Viswanathan is also in the cast, while Yuvan Shankar Raj (whose
re-recording especially in the climax was an original piece of A
R Rahman) appears for a song, while Sarika has been roped in for
a song for mere publicity. Cinematographer Suresh Devan has done
a neat job.
