| A
very disconcerting story. But then Bala's films have always been
like that. Shall we say food for thought or torment to the brain?
PITAMAGAN is something novel. If you think that it is a wholesome
entertainer, then you are right and wrong. Its dull , gory but
makes you to think, think and think. So is it an art film? No it's
not. The film is harsh, gruesome. Tragedy seems to be its soul.
There is a story, but what stands out is the characterization.
The story surfaces at the bottom, but the four lead characters
stand out.
Chittan (Vikram) is an anguished soul who resides in a graveyard.
He has a story to say. His mother had delivered him in a graveyard
and she is no more after his birth. Born and brought up here Chittan
is a dreadful person. He is blessed with this unusual energy where
he can single handedly thrash a dozen of men.
He moves into a village where he meets Gomathy (Sangeetha), who
is a ganja beedi seller. Gomathy has an unusual personality. The
lady cares for none and is severely independent. Taking pity on
Chittan she gets him employed in the ganja gardens. But as fate
would have it, Chittan gets arrested in a raid at the ganja garden.
Shakthivel (Surya) is a conman, who is jailed for selling foreign
goods, medicines and gambling. Manju (Laila) is responsible for
him being in jail. She was a victim of him con game. Shakthivel
meets Chittan in the jail. An unusual bond develops between them.
After getting released from the jail the four of these get closer
and become very good friends. Things take a turn. Shakthivel is
killed by a local goonda, who suspects him of being a hindrance
to his illegal trade. Chittan who has almost sober down in his
friends company, is the one who gets most affected by Shaktivel's
death. The cruel person who existed him comes to life again and
he does the unwarranted.
Indeed a taxing story for the brain. But what needs to be watched
out are some real explicit scenes. Technically the film is perfect.
Music by Ilayaraja is first rate. The best thing about the film
is the performance by the four lead stars. Vikram gets a new image
all together with this film. It's a successful experimentation.
Surya as Shakthivel impresses. Probably he is the only light hearted
person in this film. His encounters with Laila are good. Laila
has after long given an astounding performance. Sangeeta fills
life into her role. There is a song sequence by Simran, which is
good. Rest of them lend adequate support. Bala has very successfully
attracted excellent performance from all. Overall PITAMAGAN is
a good film, which keeps tormenting even days after you have seen
the film.
