Kondein is a dark, deadly and daring film from Selva Raghavan who
had directed last year’s big hit Thulluvatho Illamai. He treads
on grounds where angels fear to, by exploring into the mind of a
youth who is mentally and physically abused in his childhood. He
slowly turns into a psychopath who kills anyone who comes in the
way of the girl for whom he has an obsessive love!
Vinod (Dhanush) is an orphan brought up by father Rozario (Nagesh).
He goes to a posh college in the city. He is an introvert, he dresses
shabbily and his friends make fun of him for his looks and stammering
way of talk.
Meanwhile, Aadi (Sudeep), the college Romeo is slapped by Divya
(Sonia), another student when he tries to flirt with. In this new
surroundings Vinod finds it difficult to survive and decides to
go back to the orphanage. Divya tries to help him out of sympathy.
She takes him to her house and introduces him to her father who
is the Director General of Police. Slowly Divya becomes Vinod’s
‘guardian angel’ and protector but the poor guy mistakes
all this for love. But when he realizes that Divya is actually in
love with Aadi all hell breaks lose.
When Divya’s father comes to know about her affair with Aadi,
the lovers are separated but Vinod hatches a plan to unite them
and takes Divya to a deep forest and put the blame on Aadi. He is
actually a psychopath and tells Divya about his bitter childhood
and his obsessive love for her. The film becomes so dense and bizarre
as it moves towards the climax!
Director Selvabharathi has carved his brother Dhanush’s character
from that of Shahrukh Khan in Darr and Baazigar with even the stammering
cry of “D…D..Divyaaa..”! However the audience
hope the proceedings were a little more believable, engaging and
simple. On the positive side the film is fast paced and the scenes
where Divya tries to help Vinod is well conceived. Dhanush is impressive
as a weakling turned into an obsessive lover. New boy Sudeep, a
Mumbai guy looks handsome and does what is required of him. Sonia
is appealing and sensual as the object of desire. But clearly the
highlight of the film is the mood enhancing background score and
jazzy songs of Yuvan Shankar Raja.
