Industries There are 5 large scale industries of which two are spinning mills. The Indian Kare Earth Limited at Manavalakurichi is really a matter of pride for the district at the largest quantity of limenite in the world is being produced from this factory. The fourth industry is "Tac floor" situated at Ammandivilai which manufacturers coir mat allied finished products using the coir produced in the surroundings. The Travancore Minerals Limited established its units at Manavalakurichi which was taken over by the government of India from the erstwhile Travancore-Cochin government. This factory is now named as India Kare Earths Limited. It separates various components of sands and the most being and monizite which content approximately 9% Thorium and Uranium put together. Sircon is the other commercial product which is principally used in the manufacture of high temperature refactories etc. Tha abundant supply of raw materials like rubber, Tapioca, Palmyrah products, Bamboo woods of all kinds, cocunut products etc., helps promoting both large scale and small scale industries. It is worth mentioning that rubber industry and coir industry are in the progress in this district, with a Government Coir Training school at Eathamozhi. The industrial estate at Nagercoil and Industrial colony at Kaapikadu near Marthandam may be taken in to account as a sign of industrial development in this district. Formation of a rubber part at Shenbagaramanbuthur is at the active process of the government of Tamil nadu. |
